Let’s get cooking

Hola everyone.

Today I’d like to talk about something I myself am and probably the whole population (at least I hope so) is very passionate about. Food and cooking.

.

I just love cooking. And food. I mean, of course. It’s food. How can you not love food? But according to other people, cooking and food are two completely different and separate things. And I in some points have to agree. And this may come as a shock now, but sometimes I truly enjoy the cooking part more than the eating one. Super crazy, I know. But I just love it so freaking much.

.

But actually I think the whole cooking aspect and the huge interest for food pretty much lie in my genes. My mum is a professional health manager, dietologist and vegan nutritionist. And it was always normal for us to cook meals at home. So it was always normal for me to think about food and the ways you can work with it and turn it into amazing, super delicious meals. That’s the most fascinating aspect of cooking. For example, you take a plain potato and just by boiling it and then frying it in butter in a pan you can turn it into one of the tastiest pieces of food ever. I mean, who doesn’t love fried potatoes with ketchup? Everyone. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The possibilities in cooking are literally endless and that’s what I love so much about it. It’s so creative.

.

I actually know quite a lot of people who don’t cook themselves and it shocks and surprises me every single time. Because cooking is such a big part of my life and such a big hobby of mine. It’s something I do to calm down. I forget everything around me. And it makes me so happy. I even have my own Spotify playlist just for when I’m cooking. I think that says it all, right?

.

But of course I understand that some people just don’t get so often in touch with food as I do. And most of the time those people actually want to cook and want to learn how to do it. An here comes my tip for everyone who wants to start cooking – find yourself someone, preferably a cook of course, who inspires you. That special person was Jamie Oliver for me. Besides my mum and my grandma, of course. But Jamie is and always has been my biggest idol when it comes to cooking. I still have no idea how he does it, but somehow this guy can take a plain carrot and peas and turn them into the most beautiful dish you will ever lay your eyes upon. I mean, even just a bowl full of cabbage looks mouthwatering beautiful in his books. Plain cabbage. Seriously? Jamie, please teach me your ways. And besides that, all of his recipes are just so damn inspiring and creative and tasty. Whenever I’m looking for a nice meal to cook, I usually just search for something on this website, because he and his recipes never let me down. And judging from all the videos and articles I’ve seen from him, he seems like the nicest person ever. And his kitchens in his TV shows are always literally kitchen goals. I know they are sets, but I have no doubt that his kitchen at home looks just as amazing or even better.

.

Okay, so that’s that. But in order to not just repeat myself in a post I’ve already written, I thought, as I’ve been cooking quite a lot in the past months, I’d share my favorite meals with you guys. Let’s go.

.

  • Pasta with tomato sauce and tuna
    • This is literally my go-to comfort food and I usually cook it at least every two weeks if not even more often. Also it’s pretty easy too. Just grab your favorite noodles and favorite tomato sauce, elevate them and make them tasty and there you have it – super fast and easy comfort food for all you pasta lovers out there.
  • Mashed potatoes with pretty much anything
    • This is the kind of meal that I immediately associate with my home. Mashed potatoes is the meal my mum raised me with, because she never wanted to feed me those typical baby food glasses. So she just made her own. And since then her mashed potatoes are the best mashed potatoes I will ever eat in my entire life. Nothing can beat the love of a mother.
  • Ramen or Pho
    • Here comes the asian aspect of my culinary favorites list. I actually had my first Ramen last summer, in Brighton at the local Wagamamas. It was a seafood ramen and the moment I tasted it, my life changed. Since then I’ve been on the mission of finding the best ramen / pho in the world. Right now my favorite is the bowl you get at the popular restaurant called Monsieur Vuong in Berlin. It’s freaking amazing. If you ever get to Berlin, you need to check by this awesome restaurant.
  • An amazing salad
    • Since I’ve been living on my own here, I’ve discovered my special love for a good salad. The important part is the dressing. If the dressing is good, I could eat tons and tons of salad. Like caesars dressing. Oh my god. So good. So yeah, I’m one of those people who actually love eating salads. But not for the healthy aspect, but because I could just bury myself in a good salad. Oh and of course the more colorful and freaky the salad is and the more various ingredients are in it, like fruit or nuts, the better.
  • Any kind of rustic stews
    • Yeah, I love stews. Comfort food right there and then. I mean, what’s easier than chopping vegetables, putting them into a pot of soup and just waiting for them to cook? That’s pretty easy. Seriously. And it’s literally one of my favorite dishes to cook in winter when it’s cold and rainy outside and I know that I can later curl up on the sofa with a nice, hot bowl of stew. What a dream.
  • Pasta, pasta and more pasta
    • I’ve already mentioned one of my favorite pasta dishes, but let’s be honest. It’s pasta. How could you not love pasta? And what else should I say? It’s pasta. It even tastes freaking amazing just by adding butter to it.

.

So, there you go guys. That’s my love for cooking and some of my favorite dishes. Honestly, I could go on and on and on with babbling about food and my most beloved meals, but I think it’s better to stop now. And I mean, I haven’t even started about my love for baking and desserts. God. Desserts. But I guess I’ll have to save this for another day, another post. Until then I hope you enjoyed this little one here. Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment down below so we can all talk about who much we love food. How amazing does that sound? That would be my favorite discussion ever. And yeah, besides that I wish you all an amazing week and, as always, thanks for reading. x

Goals

Hola everyone.

First of all, I wanna say sorry for the certain lack of posts the past two weeks. Somehow I didn’t feel like posting twice a week, mainly because my head was basically stuffed with other things. So, please let me give you a little update.

.

Right now I’m sitting at home in my apartment in Vienna, listening to Tom Rosenthal and mainly thinking about my life. University in particular, as today was the first day of the new semester. We moved in here again last Friday and I’m feeling pretty happy to be back here again. Last week I wrote my first exam of this semester and next week I’m flying to Amsterdam with my friend for a short holiday trip and to see Martin Garrix at the Amsterdam Dance Event. And I can’t wait, seriously. God, I’m so excited.

.

But apart from all that, university has basically been my main concern right now. And that brings me to this one special topic I want to talk about today. Which is goals. And no, I don’t mean relationship, friendship or boyfriend goals. I mean the basic life goals we all have and struggle with. And I know how you’re all feeling, because the future is scaring the hell out of me right now and also, at the same time, putting the biggest grin on my face.

.

As some of you may know I’m planning to move to London to do my Master there. And this one stupid, little, idiotic thing called Brexit has basically put one huge stone in my way, which I’m trying to crawl over right now. So, in order to not have to pay like 20.000 € for university, I’m planning on finishing my Bachelor next summer. That would enable me to go to London next autumn, before the Brexit. Good plan so far, I know. But it will be hard. I know, I’m probably talking about daily hassles and small nothings here, but it seems like university doesn’t really want me to finish this early. But I will try my best anyway.

.

So, this is a huge goal of mine. To try my absolute best, work hard and finish my Bachelor next summer to be able to go to London without any more difficulties. And that really, really means a lot to me. It’s like one of my biggest dreams to live and study in London.

.

But you know, at some moments when I sit in front of my laptop and plan my semester and think about ways I could do more and better, I take a deep breath, relax and quickly think about all the goals in my life I have already achieved and all the dreams I made true. And I think that’s really something important to do. Because sometimes I talk to different people or look at young people with amazing careers and get the feeling that I’m basically a huge loser, but that’s not true. Not at all. Because I simply know that I have already achieved and done so many things I never thought I would do. And not even at this young age. I mean, I’m 21 years old, acing my Bachelor right now (yes, I do get good grades), already lived in Berlin on my own, wrote and published my own book and am working as a journalist since March this year. I mean, how crazy is that? And I’ve done, seen and achieved so much more. I really have to tell myself all those things over and over again every few times, just to remind myself to be proud of myself. And that’s so freaking important. To be proud of yourself and happy with who you are and what you’ve done and what you’re doing. You should all try it out, it will probably baffle you all, because you’ll notice something great – we are all amazing people, trying to do their best in this crazy thing we call our world. And that’s awesome.

.

I know, I have huge ass goals on my list and crazy plans for my life, but sometimes it’s really nice to look back at my own life path. Because it really makes me happy. I know I’m literally the biggest perfectionist who always pushes herself, but you know what? I try my freaking best everyday and it’s pretty perfect the way it is right now. And I’m great the way I am. I wouldn’t change a thing. And I really hope that you guys think the same of yourself, because you should and you owe it to yourself. Treat yourself. And stop comparing your life with others. You are you, they are them and everyone can be struggling sometimes. You’re all doing amazing, please never forget that.

So yeah guys, that’s my little update and post about all the thoughts that have been swirling around my head for a long time and something I find is really important. I hope you enjoyed it and that it maybe made you think a little. Please don’t hesitate to leave your thoughts down below. And until then I wish you all an amazing week and, as always, thanks for reading. x

Plants all over

Hola everyone.

So, in the past few months I’ve been redecorating my room. I mean, I loved it before but now that I’m finished I just adore it even more. I think it’s 100 percent me and perfectly represents my personality and what I like.

.

While decorating it one thing became really important to me – plants. Especially succulent plants. I feel so deeply in love with them, I just couldn’t stop adding more and more to my room. And now my room looks like a little succulent garden house. I even made my own plant holders to put them on the wall – which I totally love too. And apart from that I bought two air plants, such creepy but cool looking creatures, even more now that I put them in their own little terrarium.

.

And as I’ve been such a big fan of my little plants and since I got them could keep all of them alive and healthy – which I’m extremely proud of – I thought I’d share some pics of this beauties with you. I hope you enjoy them.

.

Do any of you also own succulent plants or any other plants? I’d be really interested to hear your experiences. And until then I wish you all an amazing weekend and, as always, thanks for reading. x

My heaven – the kitchen

Hola everyone.

Today I’d like to talk about something very exciting. About one of my biggest and favorite hobbies, actually. The art of turning ordinary ingredients like potatoes, cheese or salad into something magical. That’s right, I’m talking about cooking.

.

I know what you’re all thinking right now. I’m 21 and live alone, of course I need to know how to cook. Nobody wants to live off just pasta with tomato sauce, right? But for me it goes far beyond just making lunch for myself. The funny thing is, nobody really ever pushed me into the whole cooking thing, I was never dragged into the kitchen. I mean, my mum spends her day at work telling people about eating healthy and learning about food and stuff, but she always says that I somehow developed this love for food and cooking all on my own.

.

One aspect that clearly is one reason for this hobby is the fact that I’m a single child. When I was younger and got home from school, of course there was usually always something ready cooked for me. But as I grew older, the times changed and I had to take care of my meals myself. And since then I just fell in love with cooking more and more and today the kitchen is a sacred place for me and I usually cook two or three times per week.

.

When it comes to my cooking style I’d say my heart beats for pretty down-to-earth and mediterranean food and spices, but I’m also a huge fan of the asian cuisine (god, I love ramen / pho). And besides that I also love to bake, chocolate brownies are something like my go-to-dessert. It’s chocolatey and fudgy, what more could you wish for?

.

As none of my family eats meat (I only eat fish), I usually stick to vegetarian meals, but to be honest, the meat is not missing at all. I know how some people might say that vegetarian dishes are boring or that they miss the meat, but honestly, if you know how to handle your ingredients, veggies and fruit, a green salad with some nice toppings and an incredible dressing can create fireworks in your taste buds.

.

Idolwise I’d say that Jamie Oliver is my favorite cook out there. I often use his recipes – though I always try to give all of my dishes my own special twist and personal stamp – and let’s be honest, he’s a god when it comes to cooking. His shows are amazing, everything looks just mouth-watering (even a plain carrot – please tell me your tricks Jamie) and let’s not forget his awesome books. I also love him for the fact that he always tries to adopt current food trends and wants to make the world a better place for us all by teaching people how to cook and eat better.

.

Besides Jamie I also completely adore Heston Blumenthal. He’s one of those guys who aren’t afraid to experiment a little with food and turn an ordinary dish into a whole new adventure and experience. I really wish to once be able to visit his restaurant “The Fat Duck” in Bray, but I guess it’s quite expensive and I clearly don’t live in England, so I can just hope I’ll someday get my chance. Until then I’ll just stick to his amazing shows on TV.

.

For me, personally, food and cooking is so much more than putting something into your stomach. It’s somewhat a way of life and a way of treating yourself, your body, soul, your family, friends and whoever gets to eat some of your meals. It’s a away of relaxing and calming down, forgetting everything else around me. And when I really put an effort into a meal and get to put something magical on the plate, that’s when I’m completely happy.

.

So yeah, that’s my story about my love for food and cooking. Do any of you love it as much as I do? And what’s your favorite meal? I’d really love to hear your stories. And until then I hope you all had an amazing weekend and start of the week and are all doing well. And, as always, I hope you enjoyed this post and thanks for reading. x

The Croatian sunset

Hola everyone.

How are you doing? I just wanted to give you guys a little update on what’s happening right now. I’m actually currently in Croatia on a short holiday trip. You know, enjoying the sun and the sea and the salt in the air. Enjoying life, basically.

.
The most amazing aspect is probably the fact that this is literally one of the most nicest places ever to take pictures. And you know how much I love photopraphy – I’d marry my camera if I could. And due to that I’m currently trying to find the best pics to present them to you in my next post. I hope you like them just as much as I do.

.
Yesterday we went for a little walk after dinner and luckily catched the exact moment just when the sun was setting. And I thought before leaving you guys just with a plain text, I’d post some of the pictures I took then. Please enjoy. Oh and please stay tuned for Friday, can’t wait to show you all the photos. And until then I hope you enjoyed this post and that you’re having an amazing week and all doing well. And as always, thanks for reading. x

Coloring my hair with henna

Hola everyone.

Henna. You probably all know that paste we like to draw with on our hands to make them even more beautiful. But a few months ago I went into my local Lush store in Berlin and saw something really interesting. And I immediately got super curious.

.

Now you need to know that I usually never color my hair. I have extremely sensitive, thin and curly hair, so if I just do one little thing my hair doesn’t really like, it’s damaged. When I was younger I used to color strands of my hair – blonde, red, whatever. And then I just stopped damaging it until I completely colored it with a semi-permanent color two years ago. I tried a dark brown shade with some little red bits and I absolutely loved it.

.

I haven’t gone to the hairdresser since then and sooner or later I got really really bored of my hair. Just because I’ve literally looked the same for years now. I wanted a change, something to give my hair a little more excitement. And then I saw the block of henna hair dye in the store and got the immediate feeling of wanting to try this out.

.

Before that I’ve never had heard of henna hair dye and then looked it up to be sure what I was exactly looking at. And I now think henna is like the perfect way to color your hair without damaging it. It’s completely naturally and does the exact opposite to damage, it’s actually good for your hair. So after making sure the product was good, I had to choose the color I wanted. At the Lush store you can choose from four different colors:

  • Marron (chestnut)
  • Rouge (red)
  • Brun (brown)
  • Noir (black)

.

And of course I went for Marron, because I’ve always loved a little red touch to my hair and a delicate brown. But I’ll just let Lush tell you more:

“Deep sultry auburn – Made with all-natural ingredients, Marron is the perfect starter henna for those who want to go red, but aren’t quite brave enough to take the plunge just yet. Instead, Marron will ease you in gently with the perfect balance of daring red and a modest rich brown all while softening, conditioning and adding glorious shine. We blend fair trade cocoa butter with the finest Persian black and red hennas and ground coffee to darken the red of the henna and create a beautifully rich, traffic-stopping shade.”

.

Sounds pretty amazing, doesn’t it? So, after reading what felt like thousand different reviews and watching endless amounts of try-out-videos on YouTube, I thought why the hell not and went for it.

.

It is now two days ago that I colored my hair – with a little big help from my mum. And I have to say, I’m completely in love. But before I get to that, here’s my little description of how to dye your hair with Lush henna hair dye – or let’s say just what I did really:

  1. First I broke the whole block into it’s already prepared pieces and then took half of the small blocks – so three of the six available – and put them in a small bowl.
  2. After preparing my bathroom and making sure there wouldn’t be any stains afterwards, I put the bowl with the henna inside in the sink I had first filled with hot water and added some hot water to the henna itself too. Mum had broken the three little blocks into even smaller pieces so it would melt easier. Because as soon as you add the water, the henna begins to melt.
  3. Then you just have to add more and more water until the whole mixture looks good enough to go onto your head. We first tried it with a batter-like structure, but as soon as mum put it on my hair, the whole thing crumbled away. So my tipp is to add enough water until it feels like usual hair dye, it’s just easier to apply then. Oh and the hotter the mixture, the better will your hair look afterwards. That really makes the colors look vibrant.
  4. When the mixture is finally ready, the funny part is just around the corner – the applying. I think mum got a teeny tiny bit nervous, but after getting the mixture right I think it went on pretty fast and we were finished after like 10 minutes. Before applying it I put some Lush Ultrabalm, the nice saleswoman equipped me with, on my forehead and ears, so the henna wouldn’t leave any stains. But you can use common vaseline too, it really helps.
  5. After my hair was completely covered in the brown mixture, I put on tin foil to keep the head and the hair warm (the warmer, the better the outcome) and a towel afterwards. Some people in the reviews said that the mixture smells quite badly, but I guess if you don’t concentrate on it, it doesn’t really matter. It smells a little like green tea and mud, so yeah.
  6. And then you play the waiting game. On the package of the henna it said to keep it on for two to three hours, but I stuck to four hours, as most of the reviews said that was the best amount of time.
  7. And theeeeeen it was finally time to wash it all out and let my hair surprise me. Personally, I thought that washing it out was pretty easy. I mean it took quite some time, I think half an hour with shampoo and conditioner, but it didn’t hurt or anything. As soon as the pieces were out and I could see my hair under the water I knew that I loved it. And it just got better and better while drying it and now I’m sitting here, not getting enough of it.

 .

For me, the whole coloring process was extremely exciting. I mean, it was a huge mess indeed and I had to clean everything afterwards (there were no stains, so now worries), but as a newbie to coloring, I just loved everything about it.

.

There was one funny moment when I was sitting in front of my laptop, doing some work for uni while waiting for the time to be finally up, when I felt something roll down my forehead. I grabbed a handkerchief and put it on my forehead, just to find green stains on the tissue. And oh my god, I got so scared. I immediately googled henna and tin foil, but before anyone gets scared, the tin foil doesn’t do anything to your hair or the henna. The substance that went green was the indigo, so if some of you guys ever color your hair with henna and suddenly see something green, don’t worry. Your hair won’t go green (my fear in that moment), that’s just the indigo and completely normal.

.

So, how does my hair exactly look now? To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect. My hair is naturally a dark brown with a little golden touch. But I really missed the pep, something that tells me that my hair is alive. And now that I colored it, I got exactly that. Like it said in the description, my hair is now a beautiful shade of chestnut – bronze when it’s very light outside, in the sunshine, and dark brown with a nice red shine in artificial light. I know it sounds dumb to say that my hair changes shades according to the light, but it really does. I also read other people say that and I think that’s just amazing and so special (you can also see the differences on the pictures).

.

But besides the color, my hair also feels and looks so much better. My natural curls are extremely defined, they feel very soft and are shining all over. It’s just really healthy. And that’s why I’d recommend henna to anyone who wants to color their hair without risking anything. Even if the color of your hair doesn’t really change, it still brings some life back into your curls and waves. It really does. And I think I’ve already persuaded my mum to stick to henna from now on. Yes, it’s a little on the pricey side, but like me, I only had to use half of it, so at the end it comes to the same price as normal hair dye. With the huge bonus of not damaging any of your strands. So yey to henna hair dye.

.

I just did a little photoshoot with my new locks, so please enjoy the pictures down below. I’ve also included some pics of how my hair looked before. Oh and the pictures feature two other cool things – I’ve just bought some SuggLife merch, a wonderful khaki hoodie, which is extremely comfy, I think I’ll live in that one from now on, and my little pin I bought at Ed’s concert in Zürich, which I’ve since then worn every single day on every single outfit and I just love it, it makes every look special.

.

So yeah, there you go. That’s my story of how I colored my hair with henna hair dye for the first time and how I became a little redhead and fell completely in love with it. But have any of you ever tried henna? If you did, please don’t hesitate to tell me your story. Oh and please tell me what you think of my outcome, I’m very curious. And until then, I hope you enjoyed this post, and, as always, thanks for reading. x
