Please Like Me

Hola everyone.

No, this post won’t be about me begging you guys to like me – which I hope you do. Today I’ll be talking about a tv series I finished lately called – you guessed it – “Please Like Me”. And I loved it so much that I thought I’d introduce it to you.

.

To be honest, I can’t even exactly tell you what the show is about without spoiling some parts of the plot, but I’ll try my best:

“Please Like Me” is about the life of Josh – a 20-year-old guy – who discovers that he’s gay right at the beginning of the first episode due to the fact that his girlfriend tells him and breaks up. After that shocker he finds out that his mum tried to kill herself and he now has to help her and his family deal with her depression. And let’s not forget his dad who divorced from Josh’s mum and now hides his girlfriend from her.All while exploring his new found sexuality, hooking up with hot boys and living in an apartment together with his best friend Tom and his annoying girlfriend who wouldn’t just leave. Oh and his absolutely adorable dog John.

.

So yeah, that’s pretty much it. But let me tell you, we just touched the surface of the show and there’s so much more to it. I found the show on Netflix and just got curious, so I tried it out. I wasn’t really prepared to find such a cute, brutally honest, comedic tv series. Actually it’s an Australian comedy drama series and when you get to the very end of the show you slowly realize why it’s described as a drama too. But I don’t want to spoil anything. I guess you just have to find out yourself.

.

Overall I would describe the show as a vacation for the mind. Every little episode just brings joy, despite the drama aspect. What I loved about it the most is the style and the humor of the show and how it deals with aspects like homosexuality, mental illness, and relationships. It’s brutally honest. It doesn’t try to hide anything or make it look like there’s beauty in suicide or breakups, because there simply isn’t. And that’s what makes it so special. And apart from that the humor is seriously the best. Honestly, all the characters are quite insane. Like, who let’s his girlfriend wait in the car for hours just because he doesn’t want his ex-wife to know? How weird is that? And you sit there and all of these strange situations happen and you watch it and think “oh my god, how is this really happening? They are crazy, completely crazy”. And then you just have to laugh. Because it’s so weird and awkward and honest that it becomes funny. I’d describe it as some kind of British humor, again really honest and weird, but still amazing. And let’s be honest, the acting is mind-blowing. The characters just seem so real, they feel like real people. Which they are. Personally, I’d say that this show is better at dealing with and talking about suicide and mental illness than 13 Reasons Why, which just turns the fault to all the other characters. I’ve never seen a show as real as Please Like Me.

.

.

And actually the series is mostly written by Josh Thomas, who plays Josh. He’s an Australian comedian and with that show, I think he created a total masterpiece. For me, this show was an emotional rollercoaster and I enjoyed it so much, I was really sad that it had to end. So I can just really recommend it to any of you guys, please give it a go. And don’t hesitate to ask me about it. And if you watch it or already have seen it, I’d be superhappy to hear from you. And until then I hope you enjoyed this post and wish you all an amazing week. And, as always, thanks for reading. x

A Monster Calls

Hola everyone.

As you can see from the title of this post, today we’re going back to our movie-fan-roots. I recently watched the movie “A Monster Calls” and I thought I’d share my experience with you.

.
To be honest, I didn’t really quite know what the movie was honestly about until I watched it. I mean, I was literally drawn to it still. I watched the trailer as soon as it was out and I was already in tears afters those two minutes. But I only had an idea of what it was about. So here’s a little description:

“A Monster Calls” is about 13 year old Conor who’s mum is having a hard time fighting against cancer. His dad left the family when Conor was little, his grandma doesn’t really seem to like him that much and the other guys are bullying him at school. So you could say that Conors life is pretty tough too. That changes when one night, seven minutes after midnight, the big yew tree next to their house suddenly comes alive and turns into a monster. The monster wants to tell Conor three stories. And after that, Conor has to tell him a fourth story, his truth, the nightmare he’s trying to hide. The one thing Conor never wanted to face. (Here’s the link to the trailer if you want to watch it – youtube.com)

.
Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? I went to watch the movie with my mum – of course – because honestly I wouldn’t have been able to watch it with anybody else. I would have just sat there, screaming inside “oh my goooood, I want to be with my mum, NOOOOW!!!”. But this way I had her right there sitting next to me and I could cuddle my face into her while the tears were rolling down my cheeks.

.
For me, the movie is a pure masterpiece. It completely draws you into the story from the first second on and it breaks your heart into a million pieces, but somehow the pain also heals you. I especially liked the artistic style of the movie, as all the stories the monster tells are drawn in water colours. It’s magnificent to watch.

.
In my opinion, what matters the most and what keeps you awake, thinking about the movie over and over again, is the ending.

If any of you haven’t seen the movie, beware, spoilers ahead.

As you can probably tell, the movie ends the exact way you think it will end. Conors mum just wasn’t strong enough to fight, the medicine didn’t work the way they had planned and everyone knows she won’t make it. After the monster tells the third story, it’s Conors turn. But he doesn’t want to tell it, to face the truth, his truth. But at one point he simply has to. And that’s when we get the reminder that we are all just human. Conor simply wants it all to end, his pain, the stress, just everything. Also if it means he has to let his mother go. I think at this part the monster tells Conor the exact thing he and also we, the audience, need to hear: “You were merely wishing for the end of pain… Your own pain. An end to how it isolated you. It is the most human wish of all.”

.

Conor understands whats going to happen and that it’s not his fault and although he doesn’t want to, he has to let his mum go. In the last few moments, Conor holds his mum and the monster is with him. Then we see his mum looking up and smiling at the monster, which means that she can see it too. Conors mum then passes away, seven minutes after midnight.

.
At the very end of the movie Conor comes back to his grandmas house, who has prepared a room for him. He goes in and finds a book on his desk, a book that seems to be his mums art book (she wanted to study art). Conor opens the book and finds paintings of the three stories the monster had told him. And right on the last page he finds a painting of his mum sitting on the shoulder of the monster.

.
Personally, I think this end leaves you enough space for interpretation. For me, his mum together with the monster and her seeing it before her death means that she also met it when she was younger and struggled with the death of her father. And now that Conor is struggeling too, the monster is visiting him. What a cute way to end such a dramatic, heartbreaking movie.

.
Apart from the beauty of the whole movie, my favorite and most emotional scene has to be when Conor and his mum have the “talk”. She knows she’s going to die and leave Conor alone. And he’s angry at her. But she understands him. And while tears are rolling down her cheeks she says: “It’s okay that you’re angry. I’m angry too, and if you need to break things, by god you break them. I wish I had 100 years, 100 years I could give to you.” That scene literally broke my heart into a billion pieces. And again I was so damn glad that mum was with me. I would’ve really needed her at that moment.

.
Overall, the movie is a complete masterpiece. And I would recommend it to anyone at every age. Just keep in mind that you won’t walk out of the cinema with a smile on your face. It really hurts, but somehow the pain feels good. The movie breaks you and then cuddles you into a warm blanket full of emotions. It’s overwhelming, but in a good way.

.
If any of you have seen or read it, what do you think? And how do you interpret the end? I’d be really happy to read from you. And until then I hope you liked this post and, as always, I hope you’re all doing well and thanks for reading. x

13 Reasons Why

Hola everyone.

So I guess you probably already know what I’ll talking about today. Yes, it happened. After such a long time of fighting against it, Netflix has finally defeated me too. But I just had to give in. Do any of you guys own a twitter profile? Literally everything people were and still are talking about is this tv series “Thirteen Reasons Why”. And me being the movie and tv series fan I am, I just had to fall for it sooner or later.

.

So I downloaded it. I now have this free trial for one month – I won’t have it any longer I think, Amazon Prime and Sky should be enough – and it’s just the perfect amount of time for me to try out as much as I can. And right now, I’m kind of binge-watching 13 Reasons Why, of course. And I have to say, I really do like it. I haven’t read the book and usually I’m not into such teenage drama stuff, but this show really keeps me in front of the screen, wanting more and more.

.

I’m currently at episode 9 and craving to find out what Clay really did – no spoilers please. So far the show never happened to let me down or bore me, which is a really good sign. There’s just one critic point – the whole story. I mean, I know that the book and the show is about Hannah, but I sometimes think she really did take herself a little bit too important (please don’t kill me in the comments). I know why the other students sometimes say that she just wants attention. But on the other hand I’m so damn sorry for her and think “oh wow, it’s really important to be nice to people”. And I guess that’s what the book/show wants to tell us – just be kind to people. You never know what really goes on in their life so it’s always better to bring them happiness and not even more pain.

.

But I guess I’m already pretty late on this trend. If any of you have already seen it or read the book – what did you think? Oh and is the book better than the show? I’m really curious. And I’m really excited to watch the last 4 episodes, I can’t wait. Oh and guys, I really hope you enjoyed this short insight on what I’m enjoying tv-wise right now. And I hope you’re all doing well. And, as always, thanks for reading. x

Ps: What besides this one would you recommend me watching? Riverdale? Black Mirror? Please hit me up with some ideas guys. Thaaanks. x

The Space Between Us

Hola everyone.

So, two days ago I went to the cinema – what a surprise – and watched a movie I’ve been wanting to watch for literally two months or so. Or actually far longer, I’ve been planning on watching this one since I saw the trailer. And as you can probably guess from the title, I’m talking about the supercute movie called “The Space Between Us”.

.

Some of you may have seen it already, if so, please tell me what you think about it, your opinion. Because I noticed how the movie was criticized a lot on the internet and personally, I have to say that I did enjoy it really much. And I still do, actually. But for those of you who don’t know the movie, here’s a little description (and here’s the trailer: youtube):

The movie is about two teens – Gardner and Tulsa – who met on the internet. But there are more than just a few miles separating them as Gardner was born on Mars and hasn’t met more than 14 people in his life. After 16 years living on Mars and desperately wanting to see more, Gardner finally gets to travel to Earth. But after his explorations begin, scientists discover that his organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere. But before they can tell him, Gardner runs away and looks for the only person he knows – Tulsa. And so a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be and where he belongs in the universe begins.

.

To be honest, I don’t like romantic movies from the minds of for example John Green and Nicolas Sparks. I actually hate them. Because they are always so unrealistic and most importantly make me want to be in a relationship so so so bad. And you know that the thing of not having a date or anything like that ever, since I’m here on this beautiful planet, really is a weak spot of mine and so watching movies like those just hurts, really bad.

.

But I actually really enjoyed this movie. I mean, I love Asa Butterfield, he’s an amazing actor. And to be honest, he looks freaking fine in that hipster outfit with his Ray Bans on in the movie. And Britt Robertson is amazing too. And to be honest they are supercute together (although I just googled them both and saw that she’s literally nearly 7 years older than him, so… holy moly).

.

And the movie itself was just really good. But I think this is a movie only true, hopeless romantics can fully enjoy and love. And I am the biggest romantic you’ll ever find, so it didn’t really surprise me that I enjoyed it. I think the whole life on Mars stuff is totally cool and that they both meet on the Internet is also just completely based on how it is today. What I especially enjoyed was the style of the movie. It’s very colorful and dreamy and full of crazy adventures and, oh my god, such good music. The ending might not be what everyone wished for, but it’s the realistic one and I liked that they didn’t end it in the most cheesiest way possible because I think that would have completely ruined it for me.

.

But Gardner himself is my definite highlight of the whole movie. The character is really well developed. He’s smart and witty and adventurous and curious and just so so so romantic and honest. He just says whatever he’s thinking. And while Tulsa is a little bit closed off, he goes up to her and tells her the most beautiful things ever in the motto “when you like someone, why not just tell them?”. And I loved that. Throughout the whole movie I just grinned at him, totally adoring him. He’s the type of guy I’d do anything for to meet, seriously.

.

So yeah, as you can see I really like – love – this movie. It broke my heart but also filled me with happiness and dreamy love. It made me want to be in love, while the tears were still rolling down my face on my way home. That kind of love – funny, honest, cheesy, romantic, true and full of light and innocence – that’s what I want, that’s what the movie made me want.

.

Again, if any of you have seen this movie, please tell me your opinion. And, as always, I really hope you enjoyed this little review. I can just recommend this movie to any of you out there. Because ultimately the movie isn’t just about romance, it’s about finding out who you are and where you belong (it’s so sad that this movie isn’t based on a book). You just need to let yourself sink into the story completely and I bet you you’ll walk out of the cinema with tears in your eyes and a smile on your lips. I promise. And until then I wish you all an amazing weekend and thanks for reading. x

Ps: What’s your favorite thing about earth?

And the Oscar goes to…

Hola everyone.

Oh what a night it was. At least for me. Trying my best to stay awake through all of the glamour and good music and of course and most importantly good movies. And yes, I’m talking about the Oscar night of 2017.

.

For me, as the movie fanatic I am, the Oscars are an event I always look forward to every single year. And this year my heart was pounding for La La Land. And Emma Stone, of course. I mean, I guess I’m not the one to say that La La Land is the best movie, because sadly I haven’t seen any of the others – which I will – but now that they one the awards for best music and best production design for example, which the movie completely nailed, to be honest,  I think they deserve those six awards, seriously. And of course Emma Stone as best actress – she’s mind-blowing.

.

Also, Moonlight winning the Oscar for best picture didn’t really surprise me. I mean, the mistake and mishap was really awkward, even for me sitting at home in front of my TV. Especially because I was so happy for La La Land to win and all of them had their Oscars and had done their acceptance speech and suddenly everything broke down and I was actually really really sad for them. But on the other side I had thought that Moonlight would win. I mean, the topic is super important right now and it’s also some kind of indie underdog movie, so it was kind of clear to me.

.

Apart from that I think that the whole show went down pretty well. Looking back at last year, I think the show of 2016 was a little bit better, more funny and there was just more happiness in the room. But I guess it’s normal that nothing can be how it was a few months ago and we all know why.

.

But let’s focus on the positive side. There were a lot of great actors, great speeches, amazing musical acts (props to John Legend) and great movies that got the attention they deserved. And of course great outfits. Oh my god, did you see Emma? That dress and just everything, she looked so stunning. Like she just stepped out of a 20s or 30s movie and in my opinion nothing suits her better than a little bit of nostalgia. And of course Ryan complemented her perfectly in his tuxedo with the ruffled shirt – and looking at other opinions, I guess I’m one of those people who actually liked that outfit. And besides that, nearly everyone rocked the red carpet. I like how the trend definitely goes to effortless, simple dresses, with a little bit of bling or gold there and then. Perfect for the Oscars, I think.

.

So overall I’d say it was an amazing evening or night and with that little mishap at the end, definitely one that will go down in history. For me, this night means that I have a lot of hours to spend in the cinema, because I seriously need to update myself on all the movies I’ve missed out on.

.

Did any of you watch the show too? Or did you just read about it? Who was your favorite look? Please don’t hesitate to chat a little bit, I’d be really happy to hear from some of you. And what’s a better topic than the Oscars, right? And until then, I hope you enjoyed this post and, as always, thanks for reading. x

Welcome to Westworld

Hola everyone.

First of all I want to apologize for not posting anything on friday. I’m currently having some health issues and being a hypochondriac doesn’t really help in such situations. So yeah, I kind of got into a deep hole of sadness and anxiety, but I had a really important talk with mum and somehow she brought me back up again. That means that I’m slowly getting up and out of my hole and concentrating on the positive things.

.

And actually this blog is something that makes me really really happy and I don’t want to let any of you down and I just love writing, so I thought I’d post something today. Better late than never. And because I’m currently having no lectures and uni is starting in two weeks, I have some time to update myself of all the tv shows and movies I’ve missed in the past three months when I was in Berlin.

.

And one of this tv shows is called Westworld. Some of you probably already know it or have seen it. And some of you probably haven’t, so…

.

Let’s start with a short description. Overall the series is about a theme park called Westworld, far far in the future, where people can go to – like the name says – live in the wild wild west. But there something quite special about it – all the actors there are robots. But life-like ones, so you never know if they are real or not. Also, as a guest, you can do whatever you want. You can hurt them, but they can’t hurt you. And at the end of the day all their memories are washed away. But after so many years of perfect functioning, the park seems to slowly fall apart and the robots, or hosts like they are called, begin to come alive.

.

Exciting, I know. Actually I started watching this series when it was released, but let’s be honest, I’m good at English, but true, real american English is a whole new level. So I waited for it to be available in German which it is now. I’m currently on episode six I think (please don’t spoil anything) and I’m in love, seriously. Usually I’m not the person to watch crime shows or just thriller series, I’m more of the Scrubs and New Girl kind. But Westworld is really blowing my mind. And after finishing one epsiode, I just need to watch another one, it’s so gripping.

.

So yeah, that’s the tv series I’ve been spending my free time with for the last week. If any of you are watching it too or have been able to watch it, please don’t hesitate to hit me up. And until then sorry again for the delay and I hope you enjoyed this post. And as always, thanks for reading. x

Also I’m going to a Two Door Cinema Club concert and I’m so freaking excited, I can’t even describe my happiness. So get ready for a cool concert post tomorrow.
