Don’t look under your bed

Hola everyone.

How are we all doing today? I hope so far your Friday has been great and that you had a fantastic week. I, for my part, am super excited for the weekend, as I’m going to another gig tomorrow, which I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time. Obviously, I’ll tell you all about it in my upcoming posts. But here’s what I wanted to talk to you about today…

Have you ever had a childhood trauma? Or something that happened to you in your childhood, maybe even something really dumb, that kind of marked you for the rest of your life? And completely changed everything? Because I do. And it might sound really stupid, but honestly, I’m just stating facts here. For many many many years of my life, I have been afraid of stuff under my bed. Monsters hiding there. Ghosts. A sock in the wrong colour. Whatever. And because of that, I made my mum look under my bed, countless amounts of times. Of course, I knew that there wasn’t something, but that’s what kids do, right? I always knew where that pure and intense fear had come from, where it had all started, the root of it all. When I was about six or seven years old, I had watched a movie that basically scared the living crap out of me. It had been late at night, because I’ve always been a night owl, and I definitely wasn’t meant to watch that movie. But still, I did. The whole thing, on my own, at night. Sounds like the worst idea ever to you? Well, yeah, it was. And until yesterday, all I could remember was that that movie was the scariest thing I had ever seen in my life. Now, pay attention to the “until yesterday”.

I found it. I don’t really know how I ended up searching for that movie at 3 am in the morning, but I did and I found it. And I can’t believe that this horror of a movie, that childhood trauma I’ve been dragging with me all these years, that stupid thing that has been floating around someplace in my head all this time, is a Disney Channel movie for kids. I mean, what? I’m sorry, but that definitely isn’t a kids’ movie. You kidding me? And here’s the craziest thing… I googled “horror movie siblings monster under the bed” and looked at the film posters and when I saw the first one, I immediately knew it was that one. And suddenly all these memories came flowing back to me and I could remember what the movie was all about. And to be honest, I’m pretty sure some of you will even know it, so here it is:

I’ve only got one question… why? Just why? Why is that a kids’ movie? Who thought it was a good idea to make kids watch a movie about monsters hiding under their bed in a different dimension? That’s never a good idea, never. Do you know how often my mum had to look under my bed because of this? Too many times. I mean, yeah, now I know that the movie isn’t really a horror, but when you’re six, you forget about all the nice parts. So here’s the story in short: there are these two kids, sister and brother, and the girl is a bit too grownup for her age. And suddenly the Boogeyman (again, just why? This is a kids’ movie, ma’am) comes and drags her brother under her bed and she is left with his imaginary friend, that only kids can see (???). So, they try to get the brother back and go to that other dimension, but during that, the imaginary friend also starts to turn into a Boogeyman. At the end, they find the brother and find out that all the Boogeymen had once been imaginary friends of some other kids – or with that specific one, the girl’s one – who had been forgotten about too early. So they all start believing in them again. The end.

There’s some background story of how the sister is acting so serious already because her brother has leukemia and she feels like she has to be the strong sister now, so I get how the whole movie actually has a really deep, interesting and also important meaning, but what the actual hell? It was still a freaking scary movie. Go on and google the movie and look up the Boogeyman. And then imagine seeing that as a young kid at night. I dare you.

Obviously, I know I’m being very dramatic right now, but I feel like I need to emphasize the fact that I was young and scared. For years. But at the same time, I’m so glad I finally found the movie. I’m not sure why I didn’t google it earlier, but hey, at least we’re here now. I feel like by finding it, I turned my own Boogeyman back to something less scary. Thank god.

Anyway, here’s the little story of my scarred childhood and the monster under my bed. It had been Disney all along. I should’ve known. Make no sound

Hola everyone.

And welcome back to the horror show – the part of this blog where I introduce you to my newest horror movie favorites. And today is going to be about the fantastic masterpiece called “A Quiet Place” – definitely one of the most gripping and thrilling movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I forgot how to breathe normally while watching this one and that really says something.

Okay, so let’s first discuss what this movie is actually about. Here’s a short description I got from rotten tomatoes, that pretty much sums up the whole plot of the movie:

In the modern horror thriller A QUIET PLACE, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.

I know, I know, that’s not really much. But I can tell you, this storyline is as thrilling as it is original and trust me, it is enough. And it plays with such an elementar thing as sound. I mean, try making no sound for an hour or even just thirty minutes. You won’t make it, trust me. Because it’s super hard, nearly impossible. Nearly everything we do creates some sort of sound, some sort of noise. So creating creatures that have this special feature of hearing everything and then going after it is something I’ve never seen before and I can just applaud John Krasinski for this intelligent and original idea. This is actually his first movie which he worked on as a director and I’m pretty sure that we will hear even more from him.

I seriously loved this movie. I have to say that I admire movies that really drag me into their stories and this one perfected that move. I felt like I was right there with them, from the first second on. And I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one, because the cinema was dead-silent. You could have heard a pin dropping to the ground, it was that silent in the room, I’m not even exaggerating. The people next to us had a box full of popcorn with them, I don’t think that they even dared to touch it once. I mean, if a movie can create such a feeling in an audience, it just has to be a amazing, there’s no other possible way.

And apart from that I loved the acting. Usually, dialogues turn a good movie into a great one. But in this case there weren’t any dialogues at all, in 80 % of the movie it’s completely silent. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (which are a couple on and off-screen, so the chemistry between them is fantastic) and the other young actors playing their children (the one playing the girl is deaf in real life too) are such damn good actors that you don’t even need any talking. It would actually be nearly too much, because you know everything by just looking at their faces and their actions. It’s mind-blowing, seriously.

And last but not least I liked that the movie isn’t overdramatic in any way. If there weren’t these alien creatures that want to kill everything and everyone, it would actually be a pretty basic story. There aren’t any unrealistic deaths, nothing that would make you say “Oh really? Did they have to do that? Yeah, like stuff like this would actually happen…”. Everything about it seems right, although we only get to see such a small part of a huge story – three days to be exact.

So yeah, this movie just does it all right. I was blown away when I walked out of the cinema and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. Movies like this one are the reason why I love going to and watching movies so much. Movies like this one deserve to be seen, they have to be seen. And again, props to everyone included in creating this masterpiece, you did your job bloody well.

You’ll float too

The horror movie fans among you probably already know which movie I’m talking about right now. Exactly. IT. Basically the most talked about horror movie of this year. And as the big horror movie fan I am, I just had to watch it myself. And I can tell you, it was like nothing I had expected.

So, first of all you should know that I’ve never once read a Stephen King novel. I know, what a shame. An author and never read one of those classics. But yeah, horror and thriller novels were never my kind of stories, so I never really paid attention to them. But of course I knew IT or Pennywise and the story of this creepy clown that likes to kill children. And of course I knew Stephen King. Like, who doesn’t?

And here I was, a huge horror fan, hearing about this new, remade version of such a classical horror. And after seeing so many people freaking out about it, I just got really curious. And this weekend I finally gave it a go and dragged my parents with me to the cinema.

And before I start presenting my thoughts, here’s a little description of the movie and a trailer. So, here’s the story:

“When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.”

I have to say, I didn’t quite know what to expect. But I surely didn’t expect what was to come. After the first five minutes I was already sitting there in my seat, mouth wide open in shock and my mum looking at me like “this is all your fault”. That movie is so brutal. Holy moly. Like, usually I’m more like the evil demon, stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren, James Wan type of horror lover, so this really was a surprise to me.

Throughout the movie the story always switches from really serious to funny to shocking to ridicolous to scary and back to serious again. It’s a rollercoaster. And you can really sense that it was meant to be kind of trivial in a humorous way sometimes, because there are just a lot of jokes and funny moments. Something you’d never expect from a horror movie. I laughed quite a lot, but I think that also lighted up the whole thing, I think it’s an important aspect of the movie.

But what really blew me away was the performance of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. I mean, this scene at the beginning with this little kid Georgie and his cute boat that sinks down into the sewers and his meeting with Pennywise. That’s so creepy. He plays this role so amazingly good, it’s crazy. His mimic and just everything. So good. Oh and the music is amazing too. A lot of kids singing and laughing, so it’s really creepy. And fits perfectly.

Overall the movie is something really different. And I think it really depends on what you like and on what you expect whether you to like the movie or not. I think I did. Sometimes it really got a little bit too unreal for me, but apart from those moments, the movie was really good and quite frightening. I just like to go out of a cinema and kind of have this creepy feeling resting in my mind. I like getting scared. I know, quite weird, but hey, being normal seems to be boring anyway.

My horror show

Hola everyone.

I know, I don’t need to talk about my obsession with movies anymore, but I just need to mention that there’s one special genre that I’m in love with. One which people wouldn’t probably think that I like and love when they see or get to know me. And I’m not talking about Marvel or action thriller… noooooo… I’m talking about horror. Pure, thrilling, horrifying, super scary horror. Especially the psychological, demonic ones. I’m totally obsessed with those.

So, in order to celebrate my love and obsession for good horror movies, whereas I try to watch every good one out there, I thought why not make a list of my favorite movies for those of you who are as much in love with horror as I am. Enjoy.

The Conjuring (my number one and scariest movie I have ever watched; seriously, I never wanted to leave the cinema that badly and I can’t wait for the second part in a few months)
The Woman In Black (Daniel Radcliffe is amazing and I’ve never been so horrified at the end of a movie; although it’s scary as hell it’s a total must)
The Strangers (I watched it at the beginning of my horror movie obsession and I was scared for my life, I couldn’t even look out of the window)
The Insidious series (seriously one of the best horror series out there, a total must and personally I think the first and the third part were the best ones)
The Sinister series (what should I even tell you? It’s scary as hell and I just wanted to hide in my sweater through the whole two movies; every horror fan should still watch it though)
The Cabin In The Woods (a really different horror movie and I love it; the elevator part is my favorite although I was a little bit sick afterwards; oh and not to forget it’s the only movie where just the title appearing at the beginning made me jump)
The Purge series (for me, one of the most creative and innovative but also slightly crazy horror concepts out there; I often think what would happen when there was for real a day where all kinds of crime would be legal… personally, I don’t even want to know; anyway, an must for horror fans and exciting for me, as there’s another part coming up)
Deliver Us From Devil (another exorcist movie with a thrilling story and a dark atmosphere and I really loved watching that one)
Crimson Peak (another pretty different horror movie with a kind of magical love story in the middle of a scary house and ghosts wandering around; another total must from my point of view)
Gallows (I remember sitting in the cinema with my friend completely alone and watching most if the movie through my fingers in front of my face, so yeah; still awesome though and a total adrenaline boost)
Nightmare On Elm Street (one of the first horror movies I watched and loved it from the first second on, especially the huge plot at the end)
The Ward (I totally love horror movies which have a complex story and a plot and this one is the perfect example for such movies; although it’s super scary, I can only recommend it and I just watched it again two days ago)
Oculus (while watching that movie, neither me or my parents exactly knew what was going on, this movie literally plays with your mind, but that’s probably what makes this movie that good)
The Hills Have Eyes (usually I don’t watch movies that are bloody and just plainly gross, but I remember my parents watching it and telling me to go and do something else because this wasn’t a movie for me and a few years later I watched it myself and was kind of fascinated, don’t ask why; it’s an amazing horror movie but still brutal and gross as hell)
From Hell (one of my all time favorites, as the story is completely thrilling and Johnny Depp is in it, so it can’t be anything other than amazing)

Okaaay, I think that’s it… and yeah I know, it’s long, but I think that shows how many horror movies I watch (is that even healthy anymore? no idea…). Another thing I just noticed – horror movies have the best posters ever, they all look so cool. Never realized that.
