Meet Clancy

Hola everyone.

I hope you’re all having a fabulous day. And I hope that this post will make it even better, because guys, you’ve got a storm coming, oh wow. To be honest, I actually had something different planned for today. I wanted to tell you all about my week at Nova Rock, the festival I worked at, but that plan changed pretty quickly, as something even better happened. Guys, guess who’s back again after a hiatus of one year…

The one and only TWENTY ØNE PILØTS.

.

I seriously cannot believe it guys. This is like the biggest thing ever. And the funny part is, when I watched the video for their new song “Jumpsuit” for the very first time and heard Tyler’s voice and then saw him, I legitimately teared up a bit, because I suddenly noticed how much I had really missed them during their hiatus.

.

Maybe some of you have already noticed that my two boys are back, maybe some of you even followed the cryptic signs they sent out during the past days and also during the past months. I can just tell you, the songs don’t just sound more than amazing, no, they have such a deep meaning and complex story hiding in them, I actually had to read like so many websites and postings to fully understand what they are all about. And as I was so happy to finally get some good information, I thought I’d just do the same and present those two fantastic songs to you guys. Please enjoy.

.

Jumpsuit

As already mentioned, this song probably works as their new single – which I’m just guessing, as it’s the song that actually got paired with a video. First of all, I have to say that this song pretty much blew my mind. I mean, it’s like such a new and different sound for the boys, but I love it so much. It seems like a new milestone for them and I couldn’t be any more proud.

.

So, the song starts up in what I would call the musical corner that’s full of guitars and dark, dark beats. In short, it sounds like a super rad rock song. And then it suddenly slows down and Tyler’s angelic voice starts up and shines a light on that cool and dark corner and everything mends into one amazing musical piece. The song then continues riding those dark and rocky and slow and melodic waves until Tyler, the small bean, finally gets to show us what he’s got and pretty much scream-sings the last few lyrical parts of the song. I have to say, I’m usually not a fan of the screamo genre, but in this case it just fits. I mean, c’mon, it’s Twenty One Pilots, of course there have to be one or two screams. Also, at about minute 1:55, there’s like this super cool beat part, so please listen to the song with your headphones, you just need to experience that, seriously.

.

But oh ho, that’s not everything this song has to offer, because like I said, both songs have such a complex story behind then, which shows even more when you watch the video. So, here’s what Jumpsuit is about in short:

With their last album Tyler and Joseph created the character named Blurryface, that, according to Ty, represents all the bad feelings and worries and insecurities someone has inside them, or which he has inside himself, to be exact. It represents the dark side, basically. And as we’ve just reached a new era, Tyler and Joseph went on to create a new character called Clancy, who lives or actually is kept in a city called Dema (= Tower of Silence). This city, which is surrounded by walls to trap the residents, is ruled by the nine Bishops. Clancy, who initially stands for this new, much lighter version of Tyler, tries to escape Dema. In the video he can be seen in a deserted land, walking around with a pretty uncertain look. Then a man in a red hood on a white horse starts going after him until Clancy/Tyler let’s him reach him. The man then places his hands on Clancy’s/Tyler’s neck and leaves black marks on it, which then start to fill up all his neck as he starts following the man who’s slowly riding away again, like in a trance. So, this means that the hooded guy actually is Blurryface, who captures Clancy/Tyler until suddenly people can be seen above, at the top of the surrounding cliffs, who then start throwing yellow flower petals over Clancy/Tyler and Blurryface. This initially helps him get away from Blurry, until he is sadly caught again at the end.

.

What’s important here is the colour yellow, something that runs like a continues yellow (ha ha) thread through the new concept of the band. And it’s so relevant, because the colour actually can’t be seen by the Bishops or Blurryface. So like it’s mentioned in the lyrics, the jumpsuit with the yellow tape on it and then the yellow petals cover Clancy/Tyler. So the people on the cliffs are the rebels who try to help the people that are kept in Dema and controlled by the Bishops and Blurryface. Also, just to mention, Josh and Tyler’s wife Jenna are actually two of them, which is so damn exciting. And last but not least, the video for “Jumpsuit” starts off right where the video for “Heavydirtysoul” ended and therefore marks the end of the Blurryface era and the beginning of the Trench era (that’s the title of their new, upcoming album, but I’ll get to that).

.

.

Nico and The Niners

This is the second released song by TOP and frankly, it sounds so different, you wouldn’t even think it was by the same band if it wasn’t for Tyler’s voice. But honestly, that’s the aspect I love the most about them – they never stick to a certain genre and they’re not afraid to try something new. As for this song, I’d say it’s much more pop-ish and actually features a phenomenal rap at the end. It’s so much fun to listen to and it’s so damn hard to decide which one is better. Something I’m not going to do, because it’s literally impossible.

.

When it comes to the meaning of the song, I would say that this one is about Clancy trying to escape Dema. The lyrics feature aspects like the Bishops not being able to see yellow and the jumpsuit taking Clancy higher (I think because of the walls). Also, Nico and the Niners stand for the nine Bishops that control Dema, so Nico is actually the name of one of them.

.

.

So, there you go guys, those are the two new songs by the one and only Twenty One Pilots. Honestly, I couldn’t be any happier right now, I’m so damn grateful to have my boys back. Oh and of course they wanted to come back with a bang, so they not only released two songs, but they also gave us the title for their new album, which is called Trench and will be out at the 5th of October. And if that wasn’t enough, they also released the tour dates for their upcoming Bandito tour and yes, I will be going to one of their shows, and yes, it probably will be London. And yes, I’m already more than hyped for the ticket sale that starts at the 17th. Pray that I get tickets, please. I need to see them. I mean, just listen to Jumpsuit and imagine experiencing that live. Holy moly.

.

And yes, you’ve now made it to the end of this post. I really, really hope that you enjoyed reading it and that you enjoyed their new music even more. I’m so damn happy that I get to share their amazing art with you guys. As always, I wish you a fantastic weekend and please don’t hesitate to leave your comments down below. And, of course, thanks for reading. x

Broken Machine

Hola everyone.

I know I said that I’d do some kind of series about my trip to Paris, but something really important happened today. So important that I just have to break in the series. Today is the day that Nothing But Thieves released their new album. You can probably guess it. I’m shook.

.

Nothing But Thieves – a band I’ve now known for over a year. A band I fell in love with the second I listened to their music. And a band I’ve been following ever since, especially after getting the chance to see them live last year at Reading and experiencing their amazing show. And now, after nearly two years or so, their new album called “Broken Machine” is finally out. And I can tell you, I’ve waited for quite a while for this and now that it’s here, it’s completely blowing me away.

.

During the last few weeks, they have actually already given the world bits and pieces of the new LP. A new single, another one, an acoustic version and then even two more songs. And they were all mind-blowing. But now that I’m able to listen to the album in full, it really feels like a complete piece. A piece of art. So, without further ado, here’s the track list and some bits of my opinion:

.

  1. I Was Just A Kid
    • I would say that this is seriously the perfect beginning of the album. It shows their way of combining good, old rock n’ roll with some new indie tunes and of course Conor Masons mind-blowing voice (he’s the lead singer). I actually froze while running up the stairs because I was so shocked while listening to it for the first time.
  2. Amsterdam
    • This was the first new song they released and for me the perfect representation for what they are capable of doing. It has the most amazing intro with a beat that really sticks to your memory. And then it gets louder and faster and better. It just pops.
  3. Sorry
    • I present you the second single and definitely my favorite song of the whole album. I was so blown away when I first listened to it, I actually couldn’t stop playing it for over a week. I’ve probably listened to it more than a hundred times. It’s so good, no joke. Also, there’s an acoustic version available, which sometimes – depends on the mood – is even better. I love it.
  4. Broken Machine
    • For me, this is the one song you would never expect to hear from this band, especially not the intro. It’s kind of weird, really mechanical (HA), and then turns into this rock song with Conor’s voice in the background. And the lyrics are amazing, no wonder it’s the title track.
  5. Live Like Animals
    • If I had to choose, I would actually say that this one is the one song I enjoy the least. I don’t really know why. It’s probably the guitar chorus. But apart from that part, the song is crazily good. I just adore Conor’s voice so much.
  6. Soda
    • This song is what you could call the ballade of the album. It’s really chilled compared to the other songs and really calming, despite the guitars in the background. And somehow the lyrics are kind of depressing (“I don’t wanna be myself”), but I think that just adds the special touch to the song.
  7. I’m Not Made By Design
    • This is the kind of song I can already imagine being the craziest when played live. The guitars are powerful, Conor is giving everything with his angelic voice and the beat is amazing. It’s the perfect getting-hyped-up song.
  8. Particles
    • Apart from Sorry, this is basically the one song to fall in love with. When I first listened to it right after midnight – of course I waited for the album to be released to listen to it right then and there – I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know about you, but for me this song is literally perfect. And let’s not forget Conor’s vocals and falsetto parts. You can really hear his classical vocal training, his voice is so strong. And moreover, on the deluxe version of the album, there’s a piano version of this song and it’s even better than the “normal” version, at least for me. And yes, I cried. Just listen to it, you’ll see. You’ll tear up too. God, Conor’s voice, it’s giving me goosebumps. I wish I could bury myself into this song. Seriously.
  9. Get Better
    • This is the perfect bounce-your-head-to-it song. It’s kind of upbeat, but also a little bit slow and chilled back. It’s a mix of both. And for me yet another song that perfectly reflects the kind of style of music they are heading to or living for right now.
  10. Hell, Yeah
    • Hell. I think this song is literally about hell – “it’s just a little bit warmer”, “it’s just like home”. Somehow quite funny to me as a lyrical piece, but not when you listen to it. Right at the beginning, there’s just Conor’s voice and an acoustic guitar and he sounds hurt. You can hear the hurt in his voice. So I strongly believe that there’s so much more to this song than hell, literally. Nonetheless, this one is amazing, but that’s not really a surprise, is it?
  11. Afterlife
    • This one here is the last song on the “normal” version of the album and with it’s title, it’s fits, really. It has this kind of Amsterdam vibe to it and it’s also a little bit more calming. And for me the best last song they could have chosen.

.

When you get the deluxe version of the album, there are four more songs waiting for you to listen to them – Reset Me, Number 13 and the acoustic version of Sorry and the piano version of Particles, which I’ve already mentioned. Reset Me is kind of a punch in the face after Afterlife. It’s rough, fast and loud and exciting. So exciting. And Number 13 is simply cool. It’s bouncy, pure old school rock full of amazing, rough vocals and great guitars and beats. And it combines like five types of music in one. It’s hard to describe, so I guess you just need to give it a listen to hear it yourself.

.

So, guys, there you go. That’s the new masterpiece called “Broken Machine” by Nothing But Thieves. And it really is a masterpiece. I’m so proud of this band and of what they achieved. They really grew together with their music and especially Conor gets better and better with every single new song, every single new show. It’s actually quite sad for me that they are little bit underrated and kind of still a secret in the music universe, but I’m sure that this will change dramatically after this release. Thank god they are going on tour this winter already and I’ve got tickets to see them. I would never be able to wait much longer for the moment I get to listen to the songs live. Because if Nothing But Thieves are anything, they are the kind of band that is even better live than on the studio versions. And that’s hard to manage, trust me.

.

So, yeah, if I can give you anything, it’s the advice to give this band a listen, seriously. You won’t regret it. But I guess you’ve already noticed that I’m really hyped for this band. God, I love them. And to end this post on something exciting, I’ll leave some videos for you to watch down below. Please enjoy. And I wish you all an amazing weekend and hope that you enjoyed this post. And please don’t hesitate to leave a comment, of course. And, as always, thanks for reading. x

Divide

Hola everyone.

Just to let you know, from now on, the 3rd of March is official Ed Sheeran Day for me. And I guess you all probably know why and what I’m talking about. Of course, his new album Divide.

.

What a masterpiece, am I right? I guess the most of you have already had a listen of the album as everyone is talking about it today. The hashtag #Divide was trending for hours on twitter. The album went to number 1 in more than 90 countries within the first few hours of being out there in the world. And to be honest, nothing of it surprises me. Because he deserves it. Ed deserves all of his fame, all the love he gets for his music and for the person he is. And he deserves so much more.

.

But now let’s get to the album. I think on the one side it shows the Ed we all know and love. Stripped back songs, only him and his guitar. But on the other side it also features songs like Galway Girl or Barcelona which to me show a completely new side of Ed. And honestly, as sadly as it sounds, I’m not quite sure if I like that side as much as the other one. Probably because I fell in love with Ed because of Multiply and his songs on there. And because of his show when I saw him live. That’s why I’m used to his slow songs without anything else than his voice and guitar sounds. But I guess I’ll get used to this side too and I’m pretty sure I’m going to love it within a few days, for sure.

.

Apart from that I think Ed knows exactly how to speak to his audience. The first song of the album, Eraser, feels like sitting on the couch with him and listening to him being honest about his life and the music industry and how he got where he is now and whether he’s happy or not. It’s that rap kind of song we all know from songs like You Need Me, I Don’t Need You or Take It Back. And I think we can all agree that he just totally nails it. But as he’s saying himself, he’s not a rapper, he’s a singer with a flow.

.

Then the second song follows and I can tell you, I completely lost it at this part. So I seriously could stay strong for one song, after that the tears just kept coming. Even more because of the later songs, but we’ll get there. I think the mix of the different genres is what makes this album so special and unique, especially when thinking that this is Eds new album, they guy we usually just know to be playing with a guitar and his loop pedal.

.

Due to my love for his slow songs, it probably won’t surprise you that my favorite songs from Divide are slow ones too. Although I’ve just listened to the whole album once – I just couldn’t stand having a heartbreak for a second time on one day – I think I can already say which songs I love the most:

  • Castle On The Hill – I loved this one from the first note on and probably will never get enough of it; also, did you listen to his voice, oh my god, the raspy parts
  • Dive – I think this is like the perfect song, I just love it, also because of the message, I think many of us can relate to it once in a while
  • Happier – this is the song when I really lost it, I could seriously feel my heart break in to million pieces; also, Ryan Tedder wrote it with Ed so it’s no surprise for me that this song leaves me crying on the floor
  • How Would You Feel – this will be playing at my wedding. And yes, I should probably focus more on finding the groom first before focusing on the music, but you know… music is important too. And this song (especially in the live version) is just so angelic and pure perfection, I’ve just fallen in love with it completely.
  • Supermarket Flowers – and that is the song when I knew that it was over for me, I completely cried my heart out, and all the pieces of my heart that I had collected between this song and Happier broke apart again and I haven’t really been able to put them together since then; also, I can’t even describe how sad it makes me to know that Ed lost his grandmother, I hope she’s happy wherever she is now
  • Save Myself – this is actually the last song on the deluxe version of the album and it finishes with the sentence “And before I can love someone else, I’ve got to love myself” and to be honest, I think that is like the most perfect ending of his album, pure perfection

.

So, yeah, this are pretty much my favorites of the album. I know, they are all sad. And yes, I cried through all of them, of course I did. But I think this album isn’t so special just because it’s Eds new album. It also means that he is finally back. Ready to take on the world and bless us with his angelic voice and music.

.

For me, the album makes me even more excited for his concert in two weeks. Thinking that I’ll finally see him again, after so many years. Hearing his voice live, singing his lyrics together with so many people who all share the same love for Ed and his music. I really just can’t wait.

.

If any of you have already listened to the album and want to chat, please don’t hesitate to comment something. And if you haven’t, stop everything you’re doing right now, go and open Youtube and check out his new songs. You won’t regret it, I swear. And until then I hope you all enjoyed this post and of course Eds new album. And as always, thanks for reading. x

.

Ps: I just finished season one of Westworld yesterday and oh my god, my mind is literally blown. I don’t think I’ll be able to wait a whole year for the next season. So so so good. Oh my god.
